I don’t know how people can cope with contemporary performing arts without beer.

b)-Didn’t you like it? I loved it! It was very simple yet so effective… He was taking you from one place to another and he never lost my attention.

c)-I was bored to tears. It’s the same as always. They try to sell something as highly conceptual and in fact it’s a pain in the ass. I saw many people yawning and then they clapped like crazy just because it’s Xavier Leroy and he’s got a reputation.

a)-Come on! Now you are the one who is boring. Performing arts don’t need to be entertaining. We have known this for a while now.

b)-Yes, everything just did fit in. The only thing I am not so sure about is when he kicks the top of the table. That was the only moment where I felt a rupture with the flow of the performance.

c)-Well, I just couldn’t stand it. This general denial, the refusal to dance, the superficial ideas about the nature of the human body… It’s so old fashioned! It pretends to be so clever and it’s so plain…

a)-I wonder what is the problem with you. The violence of your reaction against this performance is rising its value under my eyes by the moment. Why can’t you accept people having a different way of working and following their own research? In my case I wasn’t thrilled but I definitely ackowledge its professionality. It’s serious, personal work. The problem for me is that I have seen many pieces very similar to it… But then this is an old piece, maybe he was one the first people to make such a proposal. Maybe some years ago this piece was more surprising and now it has become quite an established genre.

(C gives A and B the odd look and sashays away. A and B look at each other and they shrug their shoulders).

***********************************************************************

I get to the Teatro Macedonio Alcalá after bumping my head onto a shelf and with some ices cubes on my bleeding forefront. Not in the best of moods for being open and available to the performance. I always thought critics should explain how they felt before the show. The emotional context of each person plays such an important role as the lighting or the music…

The first 20 minutes of «Powered by emotion» I absolutely hate it and I want to kick Mårten’s ass. At the same time I’m angry with myself because I don’t know whether it is the performance or it’s me being grumpy. I try to focus on his dancing. No, it’s not me. It’s him. I dislike his dancing. I don’t have any problems with dancers who didn’t follow a conventional training (as a matter of fact I didn’t), but Mårten seems to go for some type of complex dancing that requires a lot of technique or just looks ridiculous[1]. The music is definitely emotional. At least this matches the title of the performance. Some members of the audience leave the room.

Then the music stops, Mårten grabs the microphone and gets to the center of the stage. He sings in an terrible Spanish and in a terrible voice «Chan Chan», mainly known because of the Buenavista Social Club CD. The whole thing is getting worse by the moment. Another group of people leaves the room.

And then Mårten sings another emotional song in his broken Spanish and there is a switch. Suddenly I am really into the performance. I have a good time and I know why. I have seen this mechanism before in plays by Forced Entertainment or Marco Berretini. The whole thing consists in making a really bad joke and maintaining it for a long time. To make such a bet you have to be a performer with a lot of guts, because at the beginning people hate you. After a while it becomes hilarious for most of them, although many never get it and they leave the room angrily. And indeed, some more people leave the room and some audience members even boo the following songs. At the end he just stands quiet while we listen to the initial music for some time.

I recognize the mechanism behind the performance and I appreciate it, although maybe I would have wished for a more elaborated structure.

This is an open text.

b)-¿No te gustó? ¡A mí me encantó!

*********************************************************************

No, no soy yo. Es él. No me gusta cómo baila.
