We make space for culture. We make space for theatre.
For the awakening of urban space to artistic and social initiative.
For this space to become the stage for culture, action, passion and reflection.
ALTO FEST brings active culture into private venues that were generously donated to the festival by citizens of the city. These venues are ready to welcome and accommodate fresh thoughts and growing awareness, with the intention of bringing together artists and audience to invigorate daily life and to make space for change. We aim to encourage individual initiative, to get people involved and to initiate human and urban retraining through the interaction of artists, citizens and the audience.
Following on from the past edition, at the end of each day the artists, audience, press and venue donors will meet at AFTERFEST, for an opportunity to discuss performances, share
thoughts and exchange experiences, making ALTO FEST an important occasion for cultural engagement, which positively allows artists and audience to build networks, reducing time and distances.
The festival is an opportunity for all the artists involved to meet, discuss and confront each other about the meaning, direction, and political and poetic needs of each artistic expression within the historical context of our time, especially at a time when the word “crisis” has become so relevant and prevalent on a global scale.
AFST is therefore set to provide an occasion to stimulate new dialogue by trying to understand how a new artistic language can be BUILT.
TOGETHER we wish to open a collective warehouse in which to study the needs, the direction and most importantly the potential of a new artistic language, capable of re- establishing the relationship between the audience and the stage, and to support political and creative independence of theatre in all its forms.
MAKING SPACE
What passionately moves us is to MAKE SPACE FOR SOMETHING NEW. We do not wish to claim back resources that have been taken away from us, instead we want to create and pursue new avenues, discovering possible new initiatives and launching authentic new practices.
making space for culture means allowing culture to become a space itself, for wherever an honest artistic action takes place, a new space is generated: a space of awareness, of sharing and most importantly of relationships. The acts of sharing and exchange open up new possibilities,
creating a communal environment where culture can actively reach out to a wider audience. In this way a plural identity is created, and great goals can be more easily achieved with shared actions.
Artists are asked to make space in their work, creating a new and unique relationship with the public. Finally artists are asked to report their experience, expressing their thoughts and process of work for a publication that will be edited and released after the festival in accordance with ALTO FEST’s guidelines which state that:
a collective creative action can determine human and urban retraining: a reflection on our responsibility to form a new audience by creating new practices and new aesthetics.
HOW DOES IT WORK
– Participation with works (in all possible forms) can include:
BODY, VOICE, SOUND, ELEMENTS

performance art, visual art, short urban interventions, installations, symposia
– performances site-specific, can be created for ALTO FEST, or re-elaborated in relevance with the venues where they will be staged: artists will have access to an online archive in which photos,
plans and specifications of each location will be stored, alongside interviews with the
owners of the donated spaces, in which further information about the specific daily
functioning of the venues will be outlined.
– technical requirements. performances have to be presented without any of the technological devices that a standard theatre stage could offer; each location should indeed be lived and experienced as it is, therefore there will be no specific light or music design however where necessary in a mutual respect of the work and of the venue, a retraining of the location may be allowed with specific technical devices, following an agreement with venue owners and with ALTO FEST’s organization, any further technical requirements will be full responsibility of the artist, and at his/her own expenses.
locations are private and freely donated by citizens whether following a request or on spontaneous initiative. Locations are of different natures, the first edition featured 4
apartments, the basement of a bookshop, a soap shop, a lutist workshop, a boxing gym, a
photographer’s studio, the staircases of an entire building, the terrace of a B&B and the XVI
century conference room of a hotel.
– reports. www.altofest.net will host an open critical forum for artists and audience. We thus ask each artist to share his/her experience of ALTO FEST following their attendance to the festival. The organisation guarantees video and photo documentation. All the material will be edited for a final publication.
– meals. For lunch there will be a canteen service providing 5 euro meals, at DAMM (parco Ventaglieri), TeatrInGestAzione’s venue. Lunches will be an occasion for meeting and exchange between artists and audience, while enjoying traditional Italian recipes cooked by the women from Montesanto neighbourhood in Naples’ Historic Centre.
– sustainability and communication
The organisation will actively work for the press coverage of all scheduled performances, to attract as much audience as possible. Also the organisation will provide technical and organisational support for performances and locations.
ACCOMMODATION NETWORK. An accommodation network among citizens, friends and supporters has been created to grant free accommodation for artists during their stay.

VOLUNTEERS AND INTERNSHIPS NETWORK. There is an open network for volunteers and internships for a range of activities during the festival, security, reception of artists and audience, and logistics internships. The network is open for anyone who wishes to register as volunteer or intern, write to us on organizzazione@altofest.net writing for subject NETWORK V/I.
– economic sustainability for artists
Accommodation free according to the aforementioned arrangements, which implies that groups of artists may not all be lodging in the same house, and that comfort standards may not be the highest.
Crowd funding. A crowd funding account has been set up (soon to be online) which artists may use under the festival’s user-name to gain contributions for their work, asking supporters to specify the name of the artist in their donation.
Appreciation fees. In keeping with our attempt to create a strong relationship between spaces and art, the festival will charge an entrance fee to performances to cover festivals’ expenses, with symbolic prices for tickets and cards; this year the audience will have the chance to further support artists by leaving an appreciation fee on their way out of performances, this fee will go directly to the artist.
2013 Residency. All participants will run for a 20-day residency, between June and July 2013, within the Living Room project, which foresees 3 artists living together in one apartment creating a performance in their living space, which will be then open to the audience during the 2013 edition of ALTOFEST.
The residency will be awarded by a critical committee, made by location and accommodation donors, one member of TeatrInGestAzione, and an artistic committee still to be appointed. Appreciation fees left donated by the audience will be an element of decision to award the residency.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE and REQUESTED MATERIAL
– our call is open to all those who fulfill the aforementioned requirements, and who uses his/her artistic research as a mean for cultural innovation, social and political transformation, without leaving out aesthetic rigour, continuously moving forwards in artistic engagement. The selection will not be based on the organisation personal taste, but rather on the perceivable ability of artists to engage dialogues and actively overcome established parameters, in line with the festival’s aim. We wish to open a dialogue with all those willing to set themselves in a critical condition, working to create new perspectives, engaged with our times, sharing the need for a critical thought.
Participants will have to sign a SIAE escape clause declaring that there are no binds on the performance and travel expenses, as well as Agibilità ENPALS tax, which will have to be communicated to the festival’s organisation. The festival will provide an official invite letter to artists and companies coming from abroad asking for funds to their national institutions or international organisations.
– materials. To participate artists will have to send a brief PDF portfolio illustrating their accomplished research guidelines (aesthetic and ethical), activated processes, and a personal evaluation of the impact previous work had on public. This document has to be integrated by links to photo and video examples of previous works, especially in non-theatre spaces (not a determining factor for the choice).
Photos and video should be uploaded on websites such as youtube, vimeo,etc…, and links should be included in the participation email. Furthermore if necessary artists may ask for a Skype meeting with ALTOFEST organisation.

There is no limit to the number of artists who will be called to attend the festival; the final call may happen before the scheduled deadline, those who will be contacted by the festival organizers with documents to sign, must return them to the organizers within 24 hours from the call, in order to confirm their attendance to ALTOFEST.

The event was almost completely self-financed and was supported with services by citizens and shops.
[…] Alto Fest should be considered an intentional culture promoting action, maybe slightly unsympathetic but
it needed to be that way. Just one word: research. Theatre took over the conventional meaning of the
relationship to become, my, yours, their language for a moment in time. It denied the standard structure of
participation to destitute the distance between object and receiver, it condensed disconnected functions on
the live urban context. The double link inherent to the event – the performance seeking the urban and the

Diamo luogo alla cultura. Ospitiamo il teatro.
Perché lo spazio cittadino si risvegli scena pulsante
dell’iniziativa artistica e sociale, come palcoscenico di cultura,
azione, passione e riflessione.
ALTO FEST porta la cultura attiva negli spazi privati, donati per l’occasione dai cittadini, spazi pronti ad accogliere un rinnovato pensiero e una nuova consapevolezza, intenzioni pronte ad incontrarsi per trasformare il nostro quotidiano, farsi luogo d’inizio di un cambiamento.
Vogliamo così sollecitare l’iniziativa dei singoli, mobilitare e mobilitarci per dare vita insieme, artisti, cittadini e pubblico, ad una nuova riqualificazione umana/urbana.
Al termine di ogni serata, come già nella passata edizione, è riconfermato l’appuntamento con AFTERFEST, un incontro tra artisti, pubblico possessore di card, donatori di spazi e stampa. Un importante momento di condivisione che fa di ALTO FEST un’occasione di partecipazione culturale, che riesce concretamente a mettere in rete artisti e pubblico, abbattendo tempi e distanze.
Il festival è un importante momento per tutte le realtà coinvolte per incontrarsi, confrontarsi, interrogarsi assieme sul senso, la direzione, le esigenze politiche e poetiche del proprio fare artistico. In un particolare momento storico in cui la parola “crisi” è universale, essa ci unisce, ci chiama.
Un’occasione per intrecciare un nuovo dialogo e interrogarsi assieme
sulla possibilità di FONDARE un nuovo linguaggio plurale.
INSIEME vogliamo inaugurare un cantiere collettivo di studio delle direzioni, esigenze e sopratutto delle potenzialità di un linguaggio nuovo, capace di rifondare la relazione tra pubblico e scena, e di sostenere l’indipendenza creativa e politica del teatro, in tutte le sue declinazioni.
DARE LUOGO
Ciò che ci muove è la passione di DARE INIZIO A QUALCOSA
DI NUOVO. Non è tanto il rivendicare risorse o mezzi che ci sono stati sottratti
quanto il desiderio di percorrere strade nuove, scoprire nuove iniziative
possibili, inaugurare nuove pratiche virtuose.
Dare luogo alla cultura significa anche lasciare che la cultura faccia luogo, perché laddove un gesto artistico onesto viene prodotto, questo gesto inaugura uno spazio: uno spazio di consapevolezza, di condivisione e cosa più importante, un campo di relazioni. Condivisione e relazione aprono a loro volta un nuovo orizzonte di possibilità, creando un territorio comune di azione e promozione culturale; formazione di un’identità al plurale in cui tutto può apparire più a portata di mano se condiviso.
Tutti gli artisti sono chiamati a rispondere all’impegno di dare luogo con il proprio lavoro, a nuove e irripetibili occasioni di incontro con il pubblico, rielaborando infine, in un documento destinato alla pubblicazione, il proprio processo creativo secondo la riflessione che fa di ALTO FEST un evento sociale collettivo:
un atto creativo collettivo può essere determinante per una Riqualificazione Umana/Urbana: una riflessione sulla nostra responsabilità rispetto alla necessità di formare un nuovo pubblico attraverso nuove pratiche e nuove estetiche.
COME FUNZIONA
– Le presenze in opera (in tutte le loro immaginabili declinazioni) possono mettersi in atto con:
CORPO, VOCE, SUONO, ELEMENTI
– le categorie
arti performative, arti visive, brevi incursioni urbane, installazioni, simposi
– le opere, site-specific, possono essere create in anteprima per ALTO FEST, o riqualificate in stretta relazione con i luoghi che le ospitano: gli artisti in programma avranno accesso ad un archivio web che raccoglie foto, planimetrie, limiti d’intervento per ogni luogo, interviste ai proprietari donatori di spazi e tutte le informazioni sui luoghi del festival necessarie a costruire le presenze
– requisiti tecnici. Le opere presentate dovranno essere “nude”, ovvero senza quel supporto tecnico più strettamente teatrale e o museale; i luoghi infatti dovranno essere abitati tecnicamente così come si presentano, non sono previsti allestimenti luci \ fonica destinati agli usuali spazi performativi, ma
laddove sia necessario, nel reciproco rispetto dell’opera e del luogo, si potrà riqualificare il luogo scelto con supporti tecnici particolari, questi dovranno essere comunque a carico dell’artista e concordati coi proprietari degli spazi e con l’organizzazione
– gli spazi sono privati e sono donati dai cittadini, o su invito, o su manifestazione spontanea d’interesse. Essi possono essere di varia natura, così come dimostra la prima edizione del festival, che ha avuto luogo, oltre che in 4 appartamenti, anche nei sotterranei di una libreria, in un negozio di saponi, in una liuteria, in una palestra di boxe, in uno studio fotografico, lungo le scalinate di un intero condominio, in un B&B, sui terrazzi.
– documentazione. Sul sito www.altofest.net sarà attivata una piattaforma critica aperta ad artisti e pubblico. Chiediamo quindi ad ogni artista di raccontarci la propria esperienza di partecipazione ad ALTO FEST al termine del festival. L’organizzazione garantisce la documentazione video e fotografica. Tutto il materiale raccolto sarà oggetto di una futura pubblicazione.
– cucina sociale. Sarà attivata a pranzo, al costo di 5 euro, una cucina sociale nello spazio del DAMM (parco Ventaglieri), che quest’anno ospita le attività di TeatrInGestAzione. La cucina sociale permetterà di riunire pubblico e artisti, gustando le ricette casalinghe delle donne del quartiere Montesanto (NAPOLI CENTRO STORICO).
– sostenibilità e promozione.
L’organizzazione s’impegna a dare massima visibilità a tutti gli eventi in programma, curandone la comunicazione affinché possa raggiungere il maggior numero di spettatori possibile. Nel rispetto degli spazi e delle opere offrirà il proprio supporto tecnico e organizzativo.
RETE OSPITALE. E’ stata costituita una rete ospitale di cittadini, amici e sostenitori che daranno gratuitamente ospitalità agli artisti del festival durante la loro permanenza.
La rete è sempre aperta; chiunque risieda a Napoli e voglia offrirsi come donatore di ospitalità può scriverci su organizzazione@altofest.net indicando in oggetto RETE OSPITALE
RETE VOLONTARI / STAGISTI. E’ stata costituita una rete di volontari impiegati a vario titolo nella struttura del festival, dal servizio d’ordine, all’accoglienza pubblico e artisti, e di stagisti impiegati nell’organizzazione. La rete è sempre aperta; chiunque voglia offrirsi come volontario/stagista può scriverci su organizzazione@altofest.net indicando in oggetto RETE V/S.
– sostenibilità economica per gli artisti.
Alloggio gratuito secondo le modalità sopra descritte; specifichiamo che per la natura stessa degli alloggi offerti, non è detto che i gruppi possano essere ospitati nello stesso luogo, e che la comodità non è garantita.
Crowdfunding. E’ stata attivata una piattaforma di finanziamento popolare dal basso (al più presto on line), che ogni artista potrà usare a nome del festival e diffondere, cercando di far arrivare contributi alla propria opera, invitando i sostenitori ad indicare nella causale del versamento il proprio nome.
Quota di gradimento. In linea con la politica di ricongiungimento tra artisti e pubblico, come nell’edizione passata, il festival emetterà a copertura delle spese di organizzazione del festival, le card d’ingresso a costi simbolici, per permettere ad un pubblico il più vario possibile di seguire gli eventi in programma; quest’anno ad esse si affiancherà una quota di gradimento d’uscita, che verrà corrisposta interamente all’artista.
Residenza ed. 2013. Tutti i partecipanti in programma concorrono di diritto all’assegnazione di una residenza creativa di 20 giorni, tra giugno e luglio 2013, all’interno del progetto Living Room, che prevede la convivenza, e la collaborazione alla creazione dell’opera, di 3 differenti artisti, nello stesso appartamento, che verrà poi aperto al pubblico durante il festival.
Per l’assegnazione della residenza, verrà costituito un comitato critico, composto dai donatori di spazi e di alloggi, un membro di TeatrInGestAzione, un comitato artistico da designare. Le quote di gradimento d’uscita donate dal pubblico saranno elemento di valutazione.
REQUISITI di PARTECIPAZIONE e MATERIALI RICHIESTI
– l’invito è aperto a chi si riconosce nelle linee guida esposte, e fa della propria ricerca artistica uno strumento di innovazione culturale e trasformazione politico-sociale, senza rinunciare al rigore estetico, al superamento del genere. La scelta non seguirà il personale gusto dell’organizzazione, ma la leggibile capacità di mettersi in dialogo con pratiche di rottura, quale questa iniziativa vuole essere. Vogliamo aprire un dialogo con coloro che sono disposti a mettersi in crisi, a lavorare per disegnare nuove prospettive, a inserirsi nelle fratture del nostro tempo, condividendo un pensiero critico. A voi rivolgiamo il nostro invito ad agire.
I partecipanti dovranno firmare la liberatoria SIAE attestante l’assenza di vincoli sull’opera, provvedere autonomamente alle spese di viaggio e all’agibilità ENPALS, che dovrà essere trasmessa all’organizzazione del festival. Per le compagnie straniere che abbiano la possibilità di chiedere una copertura viaggio dalle istituzioni culturali dei propri paesi, la direzione fornirà una lettera d’invito ufficiale.
– materiali. A tal fine vi chiediamo di inviarci in formato PDF un dossier essenziale che illustri le linee di ricerca (etiche / estetiche) perseguite, i processi attivati nel tempo, e una personale valutazione dell’impatto che hanno avuto sul pubblico. Il documento deve essere accompagnato da link ai materiale foto e video che attestino l’attività illustrata, con particolare attenzione verso pregresse esperienze in spazi non teatrali (fattore non determinante ai fini della scelta).
Foto e video dovranno essere caricati su piattaforme preposte (youtube, vimeo,…), indicandone i link di riferimento. Qualora richiesto dall’artista stesso, sarà possibile attivare un incontro conoscitivo via skype con la direzione del festival.
– invio. Il materiale richiesto dovrà essere caricato sul servizio di file sharing www.wetransfer.com, e inviato entro e non oltre le 24:00 del 31 maggio 2012 al seguente indirizzo di posta elettronica: organizzazione@altofest.net; ecco come si presenta la schermata di wetransfer:

L’evento è stato autofinanziato e sostenuto in servizi dalla cittadinanza e da privati.
[…] Quella di Alto Fest è da considerarsi un”operazione intenzionale di promozione
culturale, per certi versi indisponente ed è necessario che sia stata così. Ricerca, in una
sola parola. È il teatro ad aver strappato il senso convenzionale della relazione, a diventare
la mia, la tua, la sua lingua per una sezione di tempo. Ha negato la struttura classica della
partecipazione per destituire la distanza tra oggetto e fruitore, ha condensato una nebulosa
di funzioni non slegate dal tessuto vivo urbano. Il doppio legame che ha caratterizzato
l”evento – la performance che cerca il tessuto urbano e lo stesso tessuto che rende unica la
