Elisabet Roselló

Since I was little I've always been passionate about science fiction, the literary genre that talks about the relationship between our increasingly technical society and science and technology. A few years ago, I made a discovery that allows me to explore at both the "scientific" and creative levels: Steampunk, a retro-futurist subgenre that maps out pasts and futures that have never existed, with 19th century machines pushed to the limit, but transformed into movement... it reaches into art and aesthetics, it invites us to reflect on our current world, and to engage in almost unlimited creativity, jumping between scientific optimism and dystopia. I want to share it in order to encourage more people to explore it.

Segundo de Chomón - El Hotel Eléctrico (1908)

This is probably my favourite old sci-fi film. Spanish master filmmaker Segundo de Chomón saw the science and technology of the future as an amazing tool that would bring us ease and comfort. He was ahead of his time in terms of automation and other things. What they saw as magic at the time, is almost vulgar to us now.

Cyberpunk

I've included this video in the videoplaylist to give videoplalisters a taste of a movement that was born at the same time as Steampunk, and that helps to understand the context and the totally dystopian vision of the future in the 80s and 90s. Any resemblance to our current reality is pure coincidence... or not.

The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello

This "old-school" animated short film was nominated for an Oscar in its category in 2005. It is pure Steampunk, and it reflects the interest in the scientific adventures of the 19th century ? "Victorian" machines and technology, but much more evolved by means of ?steam? and mechanics.

Steampunk | Off Book | PBS

This clip introduces us to three artistic aspects related to Steampunk: craft, music and theatre.

Maker profile

This is a feature on a "maker" (a craftsman who isn't a professional but has the technical skills of one), focusing on the figure of one of the co-founders of the Boing Boing website, who is also an respected figure in the world of science popularisation: Jake Von Slatt. It shows one of the most interesting aspects of Steampunk - the creation of gadgets, the recycling of old technological parts...

Vintage Tomorrows

This is the trailer for a documentary that should be on the point of being released, with interviews and so on. It presents the Steampunk movement as it is today.
