There is such a thing as an interior. We?ve known this since the invention of linear perspective in the 15th century. The vanishing point at which all parallel lines ideally converge doesn?t just allow us to represent distant things on a two-dimensional plane. As Peggy Phelan suggests, it also generates the idea of depth and of an interior (Mourning Sex, 1997:27). In other words, the vanishing point has to do with representational space, but, above all, it has to do with the advent of what we came to call the ?modern subject?, that is, the mental interiority that gives rise to a certain idea of the individual. We recognise ourselves as individuals because we each have a unique personality, a unique fate, a unique desire, etc. And all these unique things take place inside us and are contained within our skin. But what happens when the interior overflows? When the things that are inside come to light and spill beyond the boundaries of the body? First of all, paradox appears: as soon as the interior emerges it becomes exterior, dashing our hopes of accessing the inside. That was not what we wanted to see. And secondly, there is disgust: all those profound concepts applied to the subject turn out to be a disgusting soft matter that shoots out. Even so, we can?t tear our eyes away: hypnotised by the very possibility of emergence, we contain our nausea, and (like old-fashioned romantics watching a porn film) we watch all the way to the end (in case the miracle and the wedding are waiting for us there).
